On to Bulgaria: OKC Rowers Shine at Trials
Eight Oklahoma City National High Performance Center athletes raced their way onto the 2012 Senior World Championships Team this morning in West Windsor, NJ. OKC will be represented in the Lightweight Men's Pair, Men's Pair with Coxswain, Lightweight Women's Quad, and Lightweight Men's Eight when the team competes in Plovdiv, Bulgaria next month.
Will Daly and Greg Flood won the lightweight men’s pair final. Daly, a 2008 Olympian who finished 11th in the lightweight four in Beijing, and his partner Greg Flood won their event in a time of 6:45.377 over training center teammates Christian Klein and Kyle Traub, who finished second in 6:46.713.
This morning’s finals wrapped up the combined trials for both the junior and senior teams that will compete August 14-19 at the 2012 World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships. In all, seven crews earned a place on the senior team.
In addition to the lightweight men’s pair, crews were named in the men’s pair with coxswain, lightweight women’s single, lightweight men’s single, men’s and women’s lightweight quadruple sculls and lightweight men’s eight.
The junior and senior world championship events and trials are combined in an Olympic year to accommodate athletes who compete in boat classes not contested at the Olympic Games.
In the men’s pair with coxswain, two USRowing Training Center – Oklahoma City crews went head-to-head in the finals with Justin Stangel, Blaise Didier and coxswain Stephen Young defeating the trio of Ryan Shelton, Max Goff and coxswain Marcus McElhenney in a time of 7:08.784 to 7:12.066.
In the lightweight women’s quad, the composite entry of Pocock Rowing Center, Riverside Boat Club and the USRowing Training Center – Oklahoma City of Hillary Saeger, Lindsey Hochman, Michelle Sechser and Chelsea Smith won in a time of 6:54.285 over Vesper Boat Club, which finished second in 7:09.630.
The final event of the morning, the lightweight men’s eight, saw the composite crew from Community Rowing, Inc., and Riverside Boat Club of coxswain Sean Fanning, Phil Grisdela, OKC's Anders Corbett, Andrew Hashway, Martin Forde, Nick Dawe, Sean McKenna, Will Robins, and Ryan Fox win in 5:57.839 over the Vesper Boat Club entry that finished second in 6:02.139.

Senior National Team Berths on the Line for OKC Athletes

Beginning Monday morning on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, NJ, racing in the 2012 Non-Olympic Senior World Championship Trial gets underway.
Racing in the senior event will feature competition in the men’s pair with coxswain, lightweight men’s and women’s singles, lightweight men’s pair, lightweight men’s and women’s quadruple sculls and the lightweight men’s eight.
Winners of their respective events will be named to the teams that will compete in the World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships August 14-19, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The combined events are run together during an Olympic year to accommodate senior boat classes not included in the Olympic program.
Hillary Saeger and Lindsey Hochman were in the 2011 World Championship bronze medal quad and will compete in the lightweight quad at senior trials in the composite entry from Pocock Rowing Center, Riverside Boat Club and the USRowing Training Center – Oklahoma City. They will be joined by OKC's Michelle Sechser and Chelsea Smith. Sechser and Smith won two bronze medals at the 2011 Pan American Games in the Lightweight Women's Double and Women's Quad.
Two men’s pairs with coxswain from the Oklahoma City training center will go head-to-head for a spot on the senior team, including the crews of Justin Stangel, Blaise Didier and coxswain Stephen Young and Ryan Shelton, Max Goff and coxswain Marcus McElhenney.
The two boats recently raced in the 2012 USRowing National Championships with Stangel, Didier and Young winning the gold medal. Didier and McElhenney won gold in the eight at the 2011 Pan American Games and Didier finished sixth in the pair with coxswain at the 2011 World Rowing Championships. Stangel finished ninth in the pair in Slovenia. McElhenney is also a 2008 Bejiing Olympic bronze medalist.
Four USRowing Training Center – Oklahoma City athletes will be racing in the lightweight men’s pair including 2008 Olympian Will Daly who will row with Greg Flood. Daly finished 11th in the lightweight four at the 2008 Olympic Games and 13th in the boat at the 2011 World Rowing Championships. Flood finished ninth in the lightweight four at the 2011 World Rowing Under 23 Championships. The second OKC entry will be Christian Klein and Kyle Traub. Klein competed in the Lightweight Men's 8+ at the 2011 World Rowing Championships.
Racing in the combined events will begin Monday morning, with finals scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

First Place Finish for Shelton and Goff at Independence Day Regatta

With one week to go before the 2012 Senior World Championship Trials, Oklahoma City athletes headed to the Independence Day Regatta as a final tune-up on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
For the lightweight men's pairs of Will Daly and Greg Flood, and Christian Klein and Kyle Traub, it meant a tight racing schedule for Friday morning. Both pairs raced in the final of the Men's Pair at the USRowing National Championships in West Windsor, New Jersey at 9:10 AM. Two short hours later both crews were sitting at the start line for the heats of the Men's pair at the Independence Day Regatta in Philadelphia.
With the top two finishers advancing to Saturday's final, all OKC entries cruised through the three heats of the Men's Pair. In heat 1, Justin Stangel and Blaise Didier finished first in 7:07.42 ahead of second place Vesper. Daly and Flood advanced to the final out of heat two finishing first in 7:00.72 ahead of Klein and Traub in 7:04.35. In heat three, Ryan Shelton and Max Goff won in 7:04.62 followed by University Boat Club.
Also Friday, OKC's Frank Petrucci failed to advance to the final of the Lightweight Men's single, finishing fourth in heat two in a time of 7:29.65.
Saturday afternoon, Greg Ansolabehere comfortably finished first in heat two of the Men's Single in 7:20.20. Just a few hours later, Ansolabehere teamed up with Potomac's Taylor Frank to race in the Men's Senior Double. The duo, after coming off a second place finish at US Nationals, won the IDR event in 6:45.44. Union Boat Club was second in 6:58.96.
Despite losing the Friday morning battle in the Men's Coxed pair at the US Nationals to teammates Stangel and Didier, Shelton and Goff were able to claim first place in the Men's Pair in the Saturday final of Independence Day. Shelton and Goff finished in a time of 6:53.35 followed by Daly and Flood in 6:55.49, Stangel and Didier in 7:00.87, Klein and Traub in 7:03.52. Vesper and University rounded out the field in 7:11.92 and 7:27.03 respectively.
On Sunday afternoon, Ansolabehere finished in second the final of the Men's Single. He clocked a time of 7:48.89 behind Dan Urevick-Ackelsberg of Undine Boat Club.

On a day that started with booming thunderstorms and then cleared to sunny skies, the racing was uninterrupted and began with two USRowing Training Center-Oklahoma City pairs with coxswain going head-to-head in a two boat race.
The entry of Justin Stangel, Blaise Didier and coxswain Stephen Young edged the entry of Ryan Shelton, Max Goff and coxswain Marcus McElhenney, 7:04.464 to 7:05.526. The race provided a preview of nexts week's World Championship Trial when both crews will battle for the right to represent the United States in Bulgaria.
In the men’s single sculls Matt Brown of Vesper finished first in a time of 7:11.132. OKC's Greg Ansolabehere was second in 7:13.9.
In the men’s pair, five boats from USRowing’s Oklahoma City Training Center lined up with an entry from St. Catharines Rowing Club and took the first five spots. The first three boats to cross the line were powered by six 2012 U.S. Olympians.
Winning the race in a time of 6:29.397 was Silas Stafford and Tom Peszek, followed in second by Will Newell and Anthony Fahden and in third by Robin Prendes and Nick LaCava. Will Daly and Greg Flood finished fourth in 6:39.8 and were followed closely by Christian Klein and Kyle Traub in fifth place in 6:40.9.
Stafford and Peszek will represent the United States in the men’s pair. Newell, Fahden, Prendes and LaCava will row the lightweight men’s four in London.
In the men’s double, the composite entry from Long Beach Rowing Association and Cambridge Boat Club of Nick Trojan and Austin Meyer won over the composite entry from the Potomac Boat Club and the USRowing Training Center-Oklahoma City team of Greg Ansolabehere and Taylor Frank and Philadelphia Sculling Club’s Andrew Ramsey and Ryan Allen in a time of 6:25.247.
The lightweight women’s double event was won by USRowing Training Center – OKC’s entry of Michelle Sechser and Chelsea Smith in a time of 7:07.363. The composite entry from Pocock and Riverside of Lindsey Hochman and Hillary Saeger were second followed by Ottawa’s Juliette Robert Bigras and Victoria Ozimkowsk.
Hochman and Saeger were also in the lightweight women’s quad at the 2011 World Rowing Championships and will compete with Smith and Sechser for a spot in the event at the 2012 Non-Olympic Senior World Championship trials.
After rowing in the men’s pair event, the Olympic lightweight men’s four crew of Prendes, LaCava, Newell and Fahden went back on the water and took the gold medal in the men’s four event in 5:58.601. Finishing second was USRowing Training Center-OKC, followed by the Craftsbury entry.
The women’s quadruple sculls event was won by the USRowing entry in a time of 6:39.105. The Pocock/Riverside/USRowing Training Center-OKC entry was second followed by the crew from Craftsbury.
The morning racing was concluded with a dual race in the mixed legs, trunk and arms four with coxswain adaptive event between two USRowing entries. The winning boat, made up of five 2012 Paralympians Alexandra Stein, Eleni Englert, OKC's Emma Preuschl and Andrew Johnson, and Dorian Weber, finished with a time of 3:30.771.
